J.H.S. 144 Michelangelo | 'Boundless'

'Boundless' is an interactive mural where art, music, and experimentation meet. Behind the scenes, Yazmeen taught herself—from scratch—how to code, wire, and engineer the mural’s touch-capacitive system. With no prior experience, she relied on research, trial and error, and hours of YouTube tutorials to transform painted surfaces into sound-activated elements that respond to touch.

Designed, in part, with students from JHS 144 Michaelangelo and completed on polytab, the mural invites the school community to explore and interact, turning curiosity into sound and participation into connection.

The artwork unfolds across time, beginning in daylight with a young girl surrounded by organic forms growing from her clothing and hair. Musical instruments weave through leaves and flowers, blending creativity with nature. As the scene shifts into night, a teenage boy wearing headphones reflects growth, transition, and changing moods.

Set against the New York City skyline, the four-panel mural celebrates the city’s cultural diversity and musical legacy through dancing silhouettes, vibrant sound waves, and natural elements that symbolize freedom, growth, and possibility.

At its core, 'Boundless' explores how music connects us—to ourselves, to one another, and to the world around us—inviting everyone to be part of a shared creative experience.
